Removal of broken 3/4” tap on USS Mesa Verde (LPD19)

Published on: March 28, 2016

The Problem: Broken 3/4 inch tap in a HT/EX. The only way to see it is with a mirror. The only place to sit the MDM is 30 inches away with 5 pipes in between.

The Fix: 5 offset, 2 extensions, a custom made bushing to keep the electrode centered, and lots of patience.

The conclusion: The picture above says it all. The center of the tap was disintegrated and removing the pieces we found the tip of the broken punch that was the first attempt to remove the tap. The customer spent 4 days beating and grinding before calling CBG to come in on Super Bowl Sunday to get the tap out. The ship was underway on time.
